Mali: 2 dead as gunmen attack tourist camp outside Bamako

Mali

At least 2 people have been killed in the Malian capital, Bamako after a suspected terrorist attack on a tourist resort popular with foreigners and United Nations (UN) workers on Sunday.

Four gunmen arriving on motorbikes and a car stormed Le Campement Kangaba, near Dougourakoro, to the east of the capital, Bamako. They were, however, pushed out by Malian forces backed by French troops.

Eye witnesses say they heard gunshots and witnessed smoke rising from the site. AFP reports that over 30 people have so far been rescued by security operatives.

Security ministry sources say jihadists are probably behind the attack.

The attack comes just days after the US embassy in Mali issued a warning about a possible attack in the capital.

Sunday’s attack brings to mind the November 2015 attack when gunmen attacked Radisson hotel in Bamako.

Fears of terrorist attacks has pushed Mali to extend a state of emergency on several occasions.
